Looking back at 2013, there are definitely some special personal moments to remember: a marriage, a new family member, a great job opportunity or just a happy memory or fun experience.

But we should look back at 2013 not only on a personal level but also on a professional one. When thinking about new commercials you have seen, there are probably some you remember as well. Well, when I think about it for a few minutes, some great commercials pop up in my mind. So let me guide you through my personal top 5 of favorite viral campaigns of 2013. I’m sure you’ll recognize and love some of them as well.

So before you start looking forward to the great food, pleasant company and heaps of presents in the upcoming days, let’s take a quick look back:

1. Dove Real Beauty Sketches

With over 61 million views on YouTube, this is one of my favorite commercials of 2013. In this touching commercial, women meet a criminal sketch artist who draws two pictures of them. The first drawing shows how they describe themselves, the second is how a stranger they just met describes them. The emotional part of it all is that the strangers’ descriptions were always more attractive and accurate than the self-descriptions, which supports the key message of this Dove commercial: you are more beautiful than you think.

2. Pepsi Max Test Drive

While the Dove commercial gave me goose bumps, this next one made me laugh. Referring back to my blog post about prankvertising, this Pepsi Max commercial is the perfect example of the new advertising trend. Pepsi Max disguised racecar driver Jeff Gordon and made him give a used car salesman the most terrifying test drive of his life, resulting in an entertaining and hilarious commercial for Pepsi Max’s zero-calorie coke ‘in disguise’.

3. Microsoft Internet Explorer Child of the 90s

With the tagline ‘you grew up, so did we’, Microsoft took me back in time for 2 minutes with this commercial. If you are a child of the nineties (and I’m not even from the nineties, but almost ;)), this commercial will make you happy and remind you of some of the fun things you did when you were a child. The purpose of this commercial is to reach GenYers with some nineties nostalgia, reminding viewers of their early relationship with the brand and reconnecting them with the brand. And it works, believe me.

4. Evian Baby & Me

In this latest commercial, Evian brings back the babies. Yes, we have all seen them before, just think about the Roller Babies commercial or Baby Dance Commercial. In this new Baby & Me commercial, they again show your inner child, but this time they want to dance with you. This way, Evian seeks to stay fresh by renewing their ‘Live Young’ concept. And yet again, they chose those cutes babies ;).

5. Turkish Airlines Selfie shout-out

And of course, this one has to be in my top 5 as well. Combine NBA basketball player Kobe Bryant and top soccer player Lionel Messi with the word of the year; the result is the selfie shout-out commercial. In this commercial, the two sportsmen have gone head-to-head in a selfie shout-out for a new Turkish Airlines commercial, showing the locations the company flies to. The result is a hilarious selfies battle between the two. With over 133 million views, this commercial is the perfect example of marketing in the selfie age.

It was a tough decision but these are my favorite viral campaigns of 2013 :-). Feel free of course to make your very own selection. In the meantime, I’m already looking forward to the great viral campaigns which will surprise me in 2014…
