Brand consideration has become a key pastime for consumers. For over half of the population studied in this paper by Initiative (pdf), – 52% of the interviewees said they enjoy searching online for a wide range of brands and products. This varies by category: 29% of consumers enjoy searching for shampoo brands, but this leaps to 66% for cars. And it varies by country: the Chinese are the most likely to search for brand information, followed by the Spanish. Some consumers told us they simply enjoyed searching for information and opinion about brands. Across the globe, nearly half of consumers – 45% – told they are spending more time than ever when considering their choice of products. This rises to 60% for mobile phones.

However, more and more GenY’ers use Facebook Places (although it’s being terminated), Foursquare, Gowalla, or other apps and social media to notify others where they are. Why are they just so eager to share their location?

A few weeks ago I got a call from a journalist working with the culture section of a daily paper. He said: “I just read your book and think there are many interesting insights on Gen Y in it… but I am running against a deadline and was wondering if you can help me with something like a top 10 list ‘for Dummies’ of what really characterizes this generation and differentiates it against the previous?”. Well, Joeri and I hadn’t really made that list at the time but I decided to give it a go. Yet, it did end up as a condensed ‘top 15′ in order to cover most of the major themes described throughout the book. So, for anyone else with ‘short deadlines’, here we go:
